In response to this article about the US going bankrupt, I commented on Social Security including crazy ideas like rolling back the retirement age and giving all my 'projected' payments away.
I was discussing this with a friend over a frosty pint later on and he almost took his empty glass and wacked me over the head with it in a well-meaning attempt to knock some sense into me.
Anybody else want to buy me a pint o' cider and discuss?

dude. it's my money. if you want to give your money to the gov. then you can do that. i'm sure that you check the extra box on your tax return to pay your taxes at a higher rate (massachusetts state tax). Right??? Well, do ya?
I give my money to the government, whether I want to or not. I am advocating for the security net being in place for those of us who do not achive significant wealth. If I do achieve significant wealth at retirment age, I am suggesting foregoing my relatively small payments so those less fortunate have what they were promised.
No, I do not check the box.
my dear st. jouissance-the-benevolent. i am currently "less fortunate"...would you please give me your SS deduction each pay period? pretty please...
If when we retire, I have achieved significant wealth (however we define that) and you - or more relevantly you and your loaded and wonderful other half are financially destitute, then I will be glad the the social security payments I am foregoing are going to someone who had so many hard times.
Of course I will not give you anything now- this is a discussion about social security and retirement.
I did just eat the last of your nuts... spicy!
I have to side with Jouissance. There must be a threshold where XXXX per month has no affect on a life.
There must be a lower threshold where XXXX has little affect on a standard of living.
And there must be a much lower threshold where and additional XX per month can have a huge impact.
Also, Tromadude's money is already gone. It's being spent right now. He better hope someone is willing to pay him back...
